Broker Policies on Dormant Open Positions Deserve Attention

An untouched trading account is not necessarily an inactive financial obligation. A CFD position can remain exposed to prices, charges, and broker intervention long after its owner stops logging in. The distinction between account inactivity and an open trade is especially important when a provider applies separate rules to each.

Policies at a Forex and online CFD trading broker may define dormancy by the absence of logins, deposits, or completed transactions. Other agreements exempt accounts holding positions from inactivity charges. The wording determines whether an unattended trade faces additional costs or administrative restrictions beyond ordinary market risk.

Dormancy Definitions Can Trigger Unexpected Fees

A provider might measure inactivity from the last executed order, even when a customer continues reviewing prices. Another may regard periodic account access as sufficient activity. Neither approach can be inferred from the account’s visible balance.

Fee provisions also differ in their treatment of open positions. Some brokers waive inactivity charges while exposure remains outstanding; others may assess charges against eligible account balances under specified conditions. A fee deducted from free cash can reduce the buffer supporting leveraged trades, even when the instrument’s market price barely changes.

Read the definition of qualifying activity alongside the fee schedule, including any exclusions for funded accounts with open contracts.

Overnight Costs Continue Without New Orders

Dormancy does not suspend financing calculations. A long-held CFD may accumulate daily funding debits, including adjustments applied across weekends or holidays, regardless of whether its owner places another trade.

Imagine a hypothetical long UK-listed share CFD covering 1,500 shares at £8.00, representing £12,000 of exposure. Assume a simplified daily financing rate of 0.025% on unchanged notional value. Thirty chargeable days would produce approximately £90 in financing costs. If the share price remains at £8.00, the chart shows no capital loss, yet the account has still incurred that expense.

The precise calculation depends on the provider’s rate, valuation method, and charging calendar. Compare the expected holding period with the contract’s financing schedule rather than treating an unchanged quote as a cost-free position.

Restricted Access Can Complicate Position Management

Some dormancy procedures involve account reactivation, identity checks, or temporary limits on certain functions. Whether existing positions can still be reduced during that process depends on the provider’s terms and operational arrangements.

The most consequential question is not simply whether a dormant account can be reopened. It is whether the customer retains a usable route to close exposure if online access is interrupted. A telephone dealing desk, where offered, may have different hours or charges from the trading platform.

Request a written explanation of which restrictions apply to logins, withdrawals, order amendments, and position closures.

Margin Closure May Occur Despite Account Inactivity

An unattended position remains subject to valuation changes and applicable margin rules. Automatic liquidation generally follows account equity and margin thresholds, not whether the customer has recently interacted with the platform.

A Forex and online CFD trading broker may send warnings before a threshold is reached, but email delivery or notification visibility does not guarantee an opportunity to intervene. A customer who assumes inactivity status protects an open trade could discover that the position has already been closed under the normal margin procedure.

A dormant account can therefore experience substantial trading activity initiated by automated risk controls, even though its owner has submitted no new instructions.

Expiring Contracts and Corporate Events Can Alter Exposure

Certain CFDs have expiry dates, rollover arrangements, or corporate-action procedures that operate independently of account activity. Pending orders may also be canceled when an instrument changes status or ceases trading.

Unlike an inactivity fee, these events can change the composition or existence of the position itself. Check whether the broker automatically settles expiring contracts, offers a replacement, or requires affirmative instructions. A prolonged absence from the platform may mean missing a deadline that was disclosed only through account messages.

Before opening a CFD position intended for an extended holding period, obtain the inactivity policy and contract schedule. Identify the event that starts the dormancy clock, calculate projected financing and fees, confirm whether closing access survives account restrictions, and record the dates on which margin, expiry, or corporate-action procedures could affect the trade.
